The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is looking beyond economists as it seeks professionals with diverse skills to meet the changing needs of the financial sector, Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has said.

Speaking during the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Educational Observership Programme, he said the central bank needs professionals from different backgrounds, particularly as technology and new forms of finance continue to transform the industry.

“Central bank is a big institution. We need different skills, different people,” he said.

Dr Asiama explained that while economics and statistics remain important, the Bank also needs professionals with expertise in areas such as economic modelling, information technology and communications.

He said the changing financial sector is also creating growing demand for skills in fintech and virtual assets, including cryptocurrency.

“These days, fintech is another area in very high demand,” Dr Asiama stated, encouraging young people to develop skills in emerging areas of finance and technology.

The Governor said professionals who join the Bank should also be willing to learn, as not everything required for the job can be taught in the classroom.

He noted that the Bank provides training for its staff, including specialised courses offered through institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Dr Asiama urged students not to limit themselves to one career path but to remain open to learning and adapting as opportunities evolve.
