The name Makola, now famous for Accra’s bustling market, carries a deeper cultural history rooted in oral tradition.
A video recently recorded at the Fredericksgrave Plantation and Heritage Site has reignited interest in its origins.
In the footage which has gone viral on social media, a local community leader explained that the original name was “Makɔla” in Ga, not simply “Makola.”
He noted that the phrase means “I’m coming for fire.”
The leader dismissed claims that the name was linked to blood, stressing that its true meaning lies in Ga heritage.
According to the local community leader's account, the name is tied to an elderly man known for his locks and for keeping fire.
Residents often went to him asking for fire, with the phrase “go to Oluman and bring me fire” becoming part of the oral tradition.
Over time, this story and the word “Makɔla” evolved into the name we know today.
Today, Makola is best known as one of Ghana’s largest commercial hubs in Accra.
