The National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has revealed that the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) paid GH¢7.6 billion to pensioners in 2025, as the scheme recorded growth in contributions, assets and investments.

According to the NPRA’s 2025 Annual Report, SSNIT ended the year with 2.14 million active contributors and 261,928 pensioners.

The scheme’s total assets increased to GH¢30.6 billion, while it recorded a 23.8% return on its investments.

Pension payments increased during the year after SSNIT raised the minimum monthly pension from GH¢300 to GH¢396.58, representing an increase of more than 32%. The adjustment followed an average 12% pension increase introduced in January 2025.

The average monthly pension also increased from GH¢1,776.81 to GH¢1,990.03.

The report said SSNIT received GH¢9.7 billion in contributions from workers and employers during the year, helping it meet its obligations to retirees.

Across the wider pensions sector, total pension funds under management grew by 28.9% to GH¢111.1 billion in 2025, up from GH¢86.09 billion in 2024.

The NPRA said the growth was supported by regular contributions and strong investment performance, adding that the pensions industry remained stable despite changes in inflation and interest rates.

The regulator said it would continue to strengthen supervision and risk management to protect pension savings and maintain confidence in the pension system.
