Some contractors within the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GhCCI) are calling on the government, through the Ministry of Roads and Highways, to expedite the payment of outstanding arrears owed them.

According to the contractors, the government owes them significant amounts for road and construction works executed under the previous administration across various sectors of the industry.

Speaking in an interview with Peace FM on August 4, 2026, some of the contractors acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to settle the outstanding debts. However, they expressed concern that the payments have so far been limited to only a few members, leaving many others without compensation.

They also accused the leadership of the Chamber of failing to give adequate attention to the concerns of its members.

The contractors explained that the delay in receiving payments has created severe financial difficulties for many of them.

They noted that following reports that the government had begun releasing funds to contractors, several creditors, including banks and other financial institutions, have intensified demands for the repayment of outstanding loans and obligations.

In response to the concerns, the Chairman of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GhCCI), Nana Opare Kwafo, confirmed that the contractors’ concerns were genuine.

He disclosed that the government owes contractors more than GH¢10 billion under the Ghana Roads and Maintenance Fund, adding that so far, only about GH¢3 billion has been paid, with disbursement still ongoing.

Nana Opare Kwafo assured members that the Chamber’s leadership is working diligently with the relevant authorities to address the issue.

He also commended the government and the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the efforts made so far in settling the arrears. However, he appealed to the government to extend the payments to all eligible contractors who have successfully completed the required verification and payment processes.
