Ghanaian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sabah Zita Benson, has shared documents of what she has described as “recklessness” in the award of government scholarships by the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

One of the documents showed a scholarship being awarded to an individual whose name was redacted, which included the award of benefits to the person's spouse and three children.

The document showed that the individual, who was identified as a lady, was awarded a scholarship by the Secretariat to study a Doctor of Philosophy programme at Cranfield University from June 2021 to June 2024.

The scholarship covered the woman’s tuition fee of nearly £19,000. It also covered an allowance of over £8,000 each for her husband and their three children.

Additionally, the government paid over GH¢90,000 to cover the cost of travel for the beneficiaries.

Sabah Zita Benson pointed out that this scholarship was just one example of numerous cases, adding that the monies used for them could have been used for a better purpose.

“The document below is just one example. We have hundreds of such cases.

These monies that were spent on spouses and dependents of scholarship students could have been used to clear the annual tuition and stipends of students in the UK that accumulated to over £37 million from 2020 to 2025. Such RECKLESSNESS!” she wrote.
