President John Dramani Mahama has said his administration inherited a fragile economy when it took office in January 2025, but believes the country is beginning to see signs of recovery following months of economic stabilisation efforts.

Speaking during his Eid al-Adha address at Independence Square on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the President reflected on the economic conditions his government encountered upon assuming office, describing a situation that had placed considerable strain on households, businesses, and job seekers across the country.

For many Ghanaians grappling with high living costs, limited employment opportunities, and business challenges, the state of the economy has remained one of the most pressing concerns.

President Mahama acknowledged these difficulties, saying they had affected nearly every segment of society, particularly young people trying to secure jobs and build their future.

“We inherited significant economic difficulties that affected families, businesses, and especially young people seeking opportunities. Over the past months, we have worked diligently to stabilise the economy to restore confidence and build a stronger foundation for growth and job creation,” he said.

According to the President, his administration has focused on restoring confidence in the economy through measures aimed at strengthening key sectors, improving macroeconomic stability, and creating conditions for sustainable growth.

He said the government’s approach has centred on prudent economic management and targeted interventions intended to ease the burden on citizens while laying the groundwork for long-term development.

President Mahama noted that although the country still faces challenges, recent economic indicators suggest that efforts to stabilise the economy are beginning to produce positive results.

He expressed optimism that the gradual improvements being recorded could translate into greater opportunities for businesses, workers, and young people in the months ahead.

“Today, I am pleased to report to you that there are signs of recovery and Ghana has renewed hope. Our focus now remains on creating jobs, supporting local enterprises, expanding opportunities for young people and improving living conditions for ordinary Ghanaians,” he said.
