Nearly one in three working Ghanaians is betting and gambling to cover daily expenses and pay debts, even as some report higher incomes.

A report by adomonline.com indicated on May 22, 2026, that the latest Old Mutual Financial Wellness Monitor shows 30 percent of working Ghanaians are using gambling as a coping mechanism amid lingering financial vulnerability.

“Although macroeconomic conditions and consumer confidence are improving, many households still lack adequate financial buffers to withstand economic shocks,” the report stated.

The study paints a mixed picture of recovery. While 37 percent of respondents say they earn more than a year ago, up from 22 percent in 2023, 39 percent remain worried about losing their income.

More than half, 53 percent, risk running out of funds within three months if they lose their jobs or income streams.

To manage income instability, more Ghanaians are taking on side jobs and freelance work.

“27 percent of working Ghanaians are now ‘poly-jobbers’ — people earning income beyond their primary jobs — up from 21 percent in 2024,” the report noted.

Young people are driving the trend, with 32 percent of those aged 20 to 29 reporting additional income streams.

The rise is linked to limited job opportunities and growing financial obligations.
