The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has indicated that MTN Ghana could secure a spectrum block in Ghana’s upcoming 5G auction as the government intensifies efforts to improve internet connectivity ahead of the country’s 70th independence anniversary.

Speaking at the launch of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations in Accra on Thursday, May 14, the Minister said the government wants the telecom giant to play a key role in Ghana’s 5G rollout.

According to him, Cabinet has approved the removal of restrictions that previously prevented MTN from entering the 5G market.

He added that the company has also been allocated additional spectrum and granted technology neutrality.

“We are committed to ensuring that MTN plays a critical role in the 5G landscape. That is why we went to Cabinet, and Cabinet unanimously approved the removal of the exclusivity arrangement, which had previously barred MTN from participating in the 5G space,” he said.

The Minister noted that telecom operators would be expected to invest in rural and underserved communities rather than focusing solely on profitable urban centres as part of Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda.

George expressed optimism that 5G services would be rolled out nationwide by the time Ghana marks its 70th independence anniversary.

“I am hopeful that by Ghana at 70, we should have rolled out 5G. Hopefully, MTN will secure a spectrum block when the auction is held,” he added.
