President John Dramani Mahama and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation in the energy sector, with discussions centred on potential UAE investments in oil and gas storage infrastructure in Ghana.
The two leaders met on Wednesday May 6, 2026, on the sidelines of the Make it in the Emirates 2026 held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
During the meeting, both leaders explored ways to deepen bilateral relations through trade, investment, renewable energy, innovation, technology, and artificial intelligence.
A major focus of the discussions was energy cooperation, particularly the need to diversify energy portfolios beyond traditional fossil fuels.
The leaders examined alternative approaches to securing the energy sector, including transitioning toward Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and expanding solar power initiatives to reduce over-reliance on crude oil.
President Mahama and Sheikh Mohamed also addressed the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, acknowledging the UAE’s strategic and delicate position in the region.
They expressed hope for a swift resolution to the hostilities involving the United States and Iran, stressing that lasting peace would enable the international community to refocus on sustainable development and innovation.
The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming the longstanding ties between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates.
Sheikh Mohamed praised Ghana as a “peaceful partner” and a “secure, stable democracy,” highlighting the country’s growing investment potential and opportunities for mutual economic growth.
Both leaders expressed optimism that the renewed partnership would deliver tangible gains in trade, investment, and sustainable energy development for the benefit of both nations.
