The High Court in Accra has awarded the ex-wife of business mogul Richard Nii Armah Quaye, widely known as RNAQ, Joana Quaye, a lump sum of GH¢300,000 in their divorce settlement.

According to a report by thelawplatform.online, Joana Quaye, the co-founder, shareholder and director of Quick Credit Microfinance Company Limited, now Bills, filed for the divorce settlement and asked the court to order her ex-husband to pay her a lump sum of GH¢50 million.

However, the judge who presided over the matter, Justice Kofi Dorgu, a Court of Appeal judge with additional High Court responsibilities, awarded her only GH¢300,000 in the distribution of the matrimonial properties of RNAQ and his wife.

The judge reportedly stated that he awarded Joana Quaye only GH¢300,000 to “discourage divorces”.

“The decision of the Court, reduced into its final orders which can be read/downloaded below, justified the grant of a financial relief of what may be deemed as a paltry amount of GH¢300,000.00 in favour of the Petitioner. The Petitioner sought an order from the Court directing the Respondent to pay a lump sum of 50 million Ghana cedis to her.

“According to H/L Dorgu, the offer of just GH¢300,000.00 to the Petitioner, who co-founded, co-owns and serves as a director of the mainstay of the business empire of the Respondent, was to dissuade ‘frequent divorces with the expectation of reaping huge monetary benefits’,” part of the report read.

Additionally, the court granted Joana Quaye one-third of the matrimonial property of the parties at Dansoman and two vehicles.

The judge also ordered RNAQ to cater for the educational and health needs of their children, adding that Joana Quaye can remarry because she is a beautiful woman.

“I order that the Petitioner shall be entitled to one-third of the said property, which I settle on her, in view of the fact that the Petitioner has three children and that the Respondent has alternative accommodation. The one-third allocation shall be three bedrooms in the building, with access to the use of the common facilities such as the sitting room, kitchen, store and all other rooms. The remaining two-thirds are hereby settled on the Respondent.

“... Here is a Petitioner who has been settled with one-third of the matrimonial home, the educational and health needs of the children placed on the Respondent, and her mobility issues are also taken care of. Physically, she is very attractive and capable of remarrying any time she feels like,” the judge is quoted as having said in his final orders.
