The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson, has criticised the Minority in Parliament over its opposition to the government’s newly announced cocoa pricing for 2026.

Koomson questioned the sincerity of the Minority, accusing them of engaging in what he described as “cheap politics” rather than genuinely advocating for the welfare of cocoa farmers.

Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, March 28, he challenged the Minority to reflect on its own record while in government.

“Did they care about cocoa farmers when they were in power?” he asked, alleging that fertilisers meant to be distributed freely to farmers were instead sold during their tenure.

He further accused the Minority of selective outrage, arguing that their current stance on cocoa farmers is politically motivated, while broader challenges within the agricultural sector receive little attention.

The criticism follows the Minority’s rejection of the new cocoa producer price, which has been reduced from GH¢3,625 to GH¢2,587 per bag.

The Minority has described the reduction as harsh and warned it could adversely affect farmers’ livelihoods.

However, Koomson dismissed the concerns, insisting that the criticism lacks credibility.

“They don’t care about the cocoa farmers. This is just politics,” he stated.

He also called on the leadership of the National Democratic Congress to empower its grassroots supporters to actively counter what he described as misleading narratives being advanced by the New Patriotic Party Minority.

Koomson urged stakeholders to remain focused on policies that genuinely support farmers and strengthen Ghana’s agricultural sector.
