To ensure workers have the energy to perform efficiently and to avoid delays caused by leaving site in search of food, contractors have adopted practical measures to make life more convenient for their teams.
According to the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, contractors are now hiring local 'chop bar' operators to cook directly on-site, with the cost fully covered.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, he explained that this approach minimises time wastage and helps keep projects on schedule.
Agbodza noted that many contractors are operating three shifts daily to meet deadlines.

He added that some contractors have maintained this system for over four months, working around the clock. As a result, many are on course to finish ahead of schedule.
“Instead of closing for lunch and letting workers leave the site to find food, they hire local chop bar operators to cook on-site. So when it’s time for lunch, everyone eats quickly, at the contractor’s expense, and returns to work. When one shift ends, another takes over,” he said.
“Some of them have been doing this for the past four months, working 24/7. There is no doubt they can finish ahead of schedule,” the Minister added.
He further disclosed that contractors working on major trunk roads under the government’s Big Push programme have already completed about half of their assigned projects.
According to the Minister, progress is visible across key corridors, with varying levels of completion.
