The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has commenced the distribution of poultry birds to local farmers and households within the Tema Central Constituency as part of a government initiative to boost food security and reduce the national import bill.

The project, which is being executed under the leadership of the President and the Metropolitan Chief Executive, aims to empower residents to produce poultry locally rather than relying on imported products.

George Batse, the Head of the Agric Department, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the distribution that the initiative served a dual purpose of lowering the high costs associated with ordering poultry from abroad and improving the nutritional intake of families through increased protein consumption.

For the first phase of the exercise, 29 beneficiaries within Tema Central received their birds.

Officials confirmed that the distribution was set to continue daily until the current stock is fully exhausted.

Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) leading the sharing of the broiler chicks to beneficiaries, reiterated that the initiative showed the proactiveness of the government.
