The Ghana cedi was Africa’s best-performing currency in 2025, according to data released by Bloomberg.

Data from the platform shows the cedi appreciated by nearly 40% against the US dollar over the year, securing its top spot on the continent.

The Congolese franc and Zambian kwacha followed in second and third place, while the South African rand also recorded a solid performance.

The cedi’s notable gains mark a significant turnaround after years of severe pressure, highlighting renewed stability and momentum for Ghana’s currency.

2026 will be a good year for Ghanaians - Dr Theo Acheampong

The cedi’s recovery has been credited to strategic policy measures, including domestic gold-buying programs to strengthen reserves, fiscal adjustments under an IMF program, and relative stability in global markets.

However, Ethiopia’s birr experienced the largest depreciation against the US dollar in 2025.

Sharing the news on his social media handle, financial analyst and technical advisor at the Ministry of Finance, Dr Theo Acheampong wrote, “Most African currencies performed well against the dollar in 2025, but the CEDI was the star performer at almost 40% y/y appreciation, followed by the Congolese franc, Zambian Kwacha and SA Rand in that order,” he posted.

The analyst had earlier commended the government for its efforts to improve the cedi’s performance and predicted that 2026 would “be a good year” for Ghanaians.
