The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo), has announced a planned power outage in Cape Coast and surrounding communities on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

According to the Ministry, the interruption is necessary to allow GRIDCo engineers to replace the existing 33MVA transformer at the Cape Coast Substation with a new 66MVA transformer.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, and signed by Richmond Rockson, Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, officials explained that the upgrade is part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen and expand the national power transmission infrastructure.

"The outage is necessary to allow GRIDCo engineers to replace the existing 33MVA transformer at the Cape Coast Substation with a new 66MVA transformer.

"This critical upgrade forms part of the government's broader agenda, being implemented through the Ministry and its agencies, to strengthen and expand the national power transmission infrastructure," the statement read.

The replacement is expected to significantly boost the substation’s capacity, connect more households and businesses to the national grid, and improve the quality, reliability, and stability of electricity supply in the Central Region.

GRIDCo assured residents that all measures have been put in place to ensure the work is completed efficiently and within the scheduled timeframe.

The ministry and GRIDCo expressed regret for any inconvenience the outage may cause, while reaffirming their commitment to supporting national development through reliable and improved power delivery.

"The transformer replacement will significantly enhance the substation’s capacity, enable more households and businesses in Cape Coast and its environs to connect to the national grid, and ensure improved quality, reliability, and stability of power supply."
