A major policy shift has opened the door for all architects in good standing with the Architects Registration Council (ARC) to participate in the Ghana House Design Competition after a recent agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The decision was reached during a high-level meeting on November 12, 2025, involving the leadership of The Architecture Alliance (TAA), the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA), the Architects Registration Council (ARC), and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to a press statement by the association, “The new agreement reverses an earlier restriction that limited eligibility to only GIA members in good standing. With this development, all architects duly registered with the ARC regardless of membership in the Ghana Institute of Architects will now have the opportunity to take part in the national design contest.”

The statement added that, “The decision marks a step toward inclusiveness, fairness, and transparency in the competition’s selection process. It ensures that qualified professionals across the architectural landscape can contribute their expertise to the project.”

As part of the agreed actions, the Ghana Institute of Architects will revise the initial call for Expressions of Interest to reflect the updated qualification criteria and adjusted timelines. The Architects Registration Council will subsequently communicate these changes to all registered architects nationwide.

Participants at the meeting reaffirmed their collective commitment to upholding high professional standards and ensuring transparency in the management of architectural projects, particularly those of national significance.

They emphasised that the collaborative move demonstrates a shared dedication to excellence, integrity, and respect for regulatory frameworks.

The Architecture Alliance expressed profound appreciation to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for his willingness to engage with stakeholders and address their concerns.

“His leadership, the group noted, played a crucial role in fostering constructive dialogue and securing a fair, inclusive resolution to the issue.”
