The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing water shortage in Tema, which has left households and industries struggling with inconsistent supply.

Speaking on Ahotor FM on August 30, 2025, Koomson described the situation as “distressing and unacceptable,” urging the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to act swiftly.

He criticised what he called poor communication and inaction by local authorities, accusing District and Municipal Chief Executives of failing to provide leadership in the crisis.

“I don’t know the job description of the DCEs and MCEs. There is no water flowing in Tema, and they are quiet, not providing any alternative. Are they sleeping on their jobs?” he asked.

Beyond domestic inconvenience, the GFL leader warned that the persistent water crisis poses a major risk to the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Policy.

He stressed that Tema’s role as Ghana’s industrial hub requires an uninterrupted water and electricity supply, cautioning that the success of the policy could be undermined if such basic challenges persist.

Aside from the domestic problems, the persistent water interruptions are also a direct threat to the 24-Hour Policy.

If the current situation is not addressed, the policy could face serious setbacks,” he noted.

Koomson called on authorities not only to restore a consistent water supply but also to provide timely communication and interim relief measures for affected residents and businesses.

“Tema is the heartbeat of Ghana’s industrial sector. If issues like water and electricity shortages are not dealt with, the 24-Hour Economy Policy will struggle to take off,” he stressed.
