The Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has announced the suspension of arrests targeting courier motor riders, following a petition from a group of concerned operators.
Speaking to the riders after they submitted their petition, Basintale revealed that he had contacted the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, to request a halt to the enforcement actions.
He confirmed that the Ghana Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission has agreed to suspend the arrests to allow for further dialogue.
Communications minister orders suspension of crackdown on delivery riders
“I placed a call to Sam George today, and the arrest of courier riders by the Ghana Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission has been suspended to pave the way for further engagement,” Basintale stated.
The petition came in response to a strict enforcement operation launched by the Commission on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in Accra, targeting unlicensed courier operators.
Several motorbikes were seized during the exercise, which the Commission described as part of efforts to sanitize the courier industry.
On Thursday, August 21, 2025, the riders, accompanied by their union representatives, stormed the offices of the YEA to express their frustration.
They argued that the cost of acquiring a courier license was prohibitively high and unfair, especially considering their low-income levels.
They called for a comprehensive review of the licensing framework to ensure fairness and accessibility for all operators in the sector.
