The Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation proudly joins African nations in commemorating the African Union Decentralisation and Local Development Day on 10th August 2025.
This day serves as a reminder to all Ghanaians of the role decentralisation plays in shaping a people-centred local governance system, while celebrating the tireless contributions of our local communities in building a stronger, more united nation. For over three decades, decentralisation has brought governance closer to the people, empowering our communities, improving public services, and driving inclusive growth.
It has given citizens a voice and placed development decisions in the hands of the people. Yet, we must be honest: our journey is far from complete. Too many communities still wait for the same opportunities others enjoy. Too many voices remain unheard.
This year’s theme, “Building Resilient Communities through Inclusive Decentralisation and Equitable Development,” aligns closely with Ghana’s ongoing reform agenda. It is a rallying call for all citizens to be active partners in ensuring that no community is left behind in our collective quest for progress.
His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Government’s unwavering commitment to a people-centred development agenda that places local government at the heart of national transformation.
As we finalise the National Decentralisation Policy and Strategy (NDPS) 2026–2030, we are setting the stage for deeper citizen participation, stronger institutions, and bold partnerships that will deliver real change on the ground.
The IMCC calls on government agencies, development partners, civil society, traditional authorities, and all Ghanaians to work together to build a future where every Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly (MMDA) is resilient, inclusive, and prosperous.
The 2025 edition of the African Decentralisation and Local Development Day (ADD) provides a platform for stakeholders across the continent to engage in dialogue, share innovations, and reflect on the transformative role of inclusive decentralisation in fostering resilient, equitable, and just communities.
It is also a moment to mobilise action toward addressing structural inequalities and accelerating progress toward the goals of Agenda 2063.
On this special AU Decentralisation and Local Development Day, we send our warmest wishes to all national-level institutions with decentralised functions, MMDAs, and community champions across the country.
Let us rise together as one people, with one purpose, and one Ghana, building strong, inclusive communities that will shape our nation’s future.
