The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has warned contractors to desist from engaging in any shoddy work, as only quality roads would be tolerated under the government’s ambitious infrastructure drive.
Speaking at a citizens’ engagement at Ndewura Jakpa Senior High School in the Savannah Region on Saturday, May 23, 2026, he stated categorically that the era of substandard road projects is over.
Agbodza noted that, in today’s digital age, citizens have become watchdogs of development, and with mobile phones in hand, residents record and share videos and photos of ongoing projects, exposing contractors who attempt to submit polished reports that do not reflect the reality on the ground.
He noted that citizens even report details such as the number of workers present on construction sites, making it impossible for contractors to hide behind false documentation.
He said, “No contractor working on any road in the country or Savannah will be tolerated for doing shoddy work. I have news for you. Today, interestingly, in the Savannah Region, citizens have decided to take their mobile phones and record everything that every contractor is doing.
“They have been sending it to President Mahama; they have been sending it to me. So, if you are a contractor, you can no longer connive with any agencies to send me a very beautiful report in Accra and pretend you are working. The people know; in fact, they even tell me how many people are on your site on a daily basis,” he added.
The minister said monitoring mechanisms have been put in place to ensure that every road project delivers lasting value for money.
This tough stance is part of the government’s Big Push Agenda, a flagship initiative designed to transform Ghana’s infrastructure landscape.
The agenda seeks to modernise road networks, connect rural and urban economies, and guarantee that public funds are used efficiently.
It also stresses citizen accountability and leveraging technology to monitor contractors while prioritising regional development in underserved areas such as the Savannah Region.
