Workers of Meridian Port Services on strike

The workers of Meridian Port Services embarked on a strike action Tuesday evening at the Terminal 3 which brought operations at the new Terminal to a stand still.

The strike action which started yesterday has continued to today, GhanaWeb has gathered.

The workers who have withdrawn their labour are mostly the junior workers who are members of the Enterprise Based Union (EBU).

According to some of the workers’ leaders, their action is to register their displeasure with the management of MPS regarding issues of their welfare.

They cited the feet dragging attitude of the MPS management on the ongoing salary and bonus review.

A worker who spoke on strict condition of anonymity said “not too long ago, the management of MPS sought our help in fighting against the Maritime and Dockworkers Union (MDU) at the time the MDU was leading a campaign against the bad concession agreement of the Terminal 3 and they have forgotten too soon that we stood by them in the difficult period. They are ungrateful".

It will be recalled that the MDU and TUC engaged in a campaign against the MPS Terminal 3 concession agreement, describing it as the worse agreement in recent history.

The campaign had positive results as the shareholders agreed to permit GPHA to manage 20% of the container business being demanded by GPHA.

Management and the workers leaders are meeting today to resolve the problem.
