The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has stated that although the company plans to phase out its 2G and 3G networks, it will adopt a cautious approach.

According to him, some users remain on these networks either by choice, to reduce data consumption, or because they lack access to 4G-compatible devices.

Speaking at a press briefing during the Digital Africa Summit in Accra on September 3, 2025, he noted that many subscribers still rely heavily on 2G and 3G.

“A lot of our customers are still operating on 3G. Even though 4G is widely available, some choose to stay on 3G because they feel data usage is faster on 4G. Others, however, use older devices that don’t support 4G,” Blewett was quoted by citinewsroom.

He explained that MTN is working to ensure that the phasing out of 3G does not deprive customers who still depend on it, despite the availability of 4G.

“If we push to shut down 2G and 3G without ensuring customers have affordable 4G devices, we risk leaving people behind,” he emphasised.
