Unionist appeals to employers to develop good labour practices

Accra, April 23, GNA - Mr Pius Kweku Quainoo, General Secretary of the Construction and Building Materials Workers' Union (CBMWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has called on government and employers to develop a work culture devoid of bad labour practices. He said some employers, especially those in the construction industry, did not apply themselves to good labour practices. He said most of them flouted labour laws, exercised forced labour by refusing workers to relax during break times, weekends and during public holidays.

He said there were still arbitral dismissals, unilateral decisions and disregard for the implementation of collective bargaining agreements and appealed to employers to endeavour to abide by the rules.

Mr Quainoo made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the weekend to send a massage of hope and prosperity to all workers during the Easter celebrations.

He said Easter is a period of sober reflections and therefore employers should refrain from acts that would tarnish their image. Mr Quainoo however commended employers for providing jobs for workers and appealed to the workers to eschew practices that would give course to their employers to complain. This, he said, would bring happiness to both parties and promote peace and social wellbeing.
