Minister says little wage and salary based employment opportunities

Toh-Kpalime, (V/R), Aug. 22, GNA - Mr Yaw Barimah, Minister for Manpower Development and Employment, at the weekend said there could be little wage and salary based employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors for school leavers in the country in the future.

Mr Barimah who made the remark at the 10th anniversary celebration of the Toh-Kpalime Vocational Training Centre, said to prevent such a situation, the country would have to equip the youth with employable skills.

He said there was the need for labour experts to find out what was required in the labour market and asked Vocational and Technical institutions to include entrepreneurial skills training in their curriculum.

The German Ambassador, Mr Peter Linder, said employment policy for the youth was essential to poverty reduction. He suggested that: "In order to achieve this goal, alliances have to be formed in which the labour market and economic policies complement each other, alongside the promotion of vocational training and employment generation for the youth",

Dr George Afeti Principal of Ho-Polytechnic said vocational and technical institutions should aim at quality training to enable them to produce technical manpower needs of the country

Mr Anthony K. Buachi, Manger of the Centre, said since the establishment of the Centre in 1994, it had trained 231 graduates. He said the Centre was under-staffed and had high utility bills to settle and appealed to individuals and organisations to assist the institution.
