Shops and hawkers at Accra’s market hub, Makola, have benefitted from a hike in sales of Valentine gifts.

The news team, on a tour to Makola observed how people rushed to stores, which have become ‘valentine hotspots’, to purchase an item or more as gifts for their lovers and friends.

Traders, who spoke to GhanaWeb's Ernestina Serwaa Asante announced that sales is booming, adding that, although they have sold enough, their shops are still opened for people to come and buy.

“Ever since we started selling these val’s gifts three weeks ago, the products get finished every day. Even with the one you are seeing, I just restocked them," one of the traders said in an interview.

Most of them (traders) noted that the packaging of the assorted items attracted more customers to make at least a purchase when they passed by their goods.

They highlighted that chocolates, flowers, and teddy bears were the most sold items on the market.

Most of the goods packaged for the day’s celebration were in hampers for both women and men.

Hampers for the women included panties, brassieres, perfume, wine, flower and chocolates.

Other gifts were teddy bear, face towel, champagne, a proposal ring, toffees among other thoughtful items.

The men were not left out as their hampers consisted of boxer shorts, singlets, belts, wines, and chocolates.

Valentine's Day which is celebrated on February 14 has also been declared 'National Chocolate Day' to create awareness on the need for Ghanaians to patronise cocoa products.

The products when patronised will help generate more revenue for the country.
