The Africa Centre for Energy Policy is calling on the president to appoint two deputy ministers for the energy ministry.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday named investment banker Boakye Agyarko as minister-designate for the energy ministry, a move which has been welcomed by many stakeholders in the energy sector.

Speaking exclusively with 3FM Business, head of policy unit at ACEP, Dr. Ishmael Ackah says looking at the size of the ministry, two deputies will be appropriate for effective management of resources under it.

“We also recommend to the government to have two competent deputies for the sector. One in charge of power, one for petroleum, so that they can bring investment into the sector and deal with the financial challenges in the sector”, he emphasized Energy expert Kwadwo Opoku, who however believes the petroleum sector should be separated from the energy ministry, says the appointment of two deputies will be a move in the right direction.

“I would have preferred that we had a separate ministry, but if it has been merged, then there is no doubt that we need two. It’s a huge ministry, and they will need two competent deputies for maximum performance,” he added.
