The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition says it has taken note of the withdrawal of services by staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Tamale and its surrounding areas, reportedly due to security concerns.
This comes after a joint resolution, signed by the Chairpersons of the Senior Staff Association of NEDCo and the VRA Division Union at an emergency meeting, cited persistent hostility and a lack of security protection as key reasons for the industrial action.
Reacting to the incident, the Ministry’s Spokesperson and Head of Communication, Richmond Rockson, Esq., has called for calm among the public as the Ministry takes immediate steps to address the situation.
“The Ministry has taken notice of these reports. Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, is currently on a short leave. In his absence, the Minister for Finance is overseeing the Ministry’s operations.
"A full briefing will be provided to the supervising Minister immediately. Hon. Jinapor is expected to resume work on Monday, August 4. Upon his return, all necessary measures will be taken to resolve the impasse swiftly,” Richmond Rockson stated via a post on X on July 31, 2025.
“On behalf of my Minister, Hon. Jinapor, I urge residents of Tamale and its environs to cooperate with VRA and NEDCo staff as they carry out their legitimate duties. It is important to note that the withdrawal of services could potentially result in disruptions to the power supply,” the post added.
The Ministry said it remains remains committed to restoring services and ensuring the safety of all utility personnel.
