Sierra Leonean stowaway disembarked in Tema Port

A Sierra Leonean stowaway, Kamara Shaka, has been nabbed and disembarked at the Tema Port.

The stowaway told security officials he stowed away, on 6th June 2019 from the Port of Freetown, Sierra Leone, in search of greener pastures.

He was discovered on board a vessel that was en route the Tema Port to discharge clinker, 4 days prior to its arrival in Ghana.

According to the Port Security Manager, Col Joseph Punamane, per the standard practice, the stowaway, would be repatriated to his home country, where the local laws there would apply to him.

“He is lucky the crew on the vessel abided by regulations and handed him over to us, therefore we the team of Immigration and PNI are all involved see to it that we repatriate him to his country.”

The Port Security Manager re-echoed the dangers associated with the act of stowaway, and cautioned the Ghanaian public to refrain from the initiative, as all attempts would turn out futile.

“Most of the time when they do this, vessel or the ship owners are fined huge amounts. For them to avoid these punishment they are tempted to throw the stowaway off board, therefore our people here having it in mind should be cautioned, because definitely if you should try it, you would be brought back at least,” he warned.
