Company sensitises public on environmental cleanliness

Accra, Nov. 21 GNA - Van-Agar Services Foundation (VASF), a Voluntary Organisation engaged in the collection and recycling of plastic waste materials on Friday organized a procession in some parts of Accra to educate the public on the need to keep the environment clean.

The march, which had 130 school children selected from some basic schools, took them through some of the principal streets of Accra and ended at the premises of the Royal House Chapel (RHC) at Abossey-Okai.

In her address Ms Esther Vanderpuye, Director of VASF, said the march was to create awareness and educate the general public about the importance of environmental cleanliness and sanitation in the various communities.

She said VASF was working with the Ministry of Local and Rural Development and the Ministry of Trade and Industries and President's Special Initiatives on how to bring on board the sachet water producers and plastic producers to tackle the indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste materials in the system.

She said her organisation had already organised some porters and shoeshine boys in parts of the Metropolis to collect plastic waste materials to designated dumping points where AMA refuse trucks pick them.

Ms Vanderpuye also announced that one Yaw Boateng, a Ghanaian based in Holland and an Italian private investor have shown interest in establishing recycling plants in parts of Accra.

She said the establishment of the recycling plants would curtail the problems that plastic waste materials possess to the environment and at the same time provide employment opportunities for the numerous youth roaming the streets of the capital.

Ms Vanderpuye thanked SPD Concrete Products for the sponsorship it had been giving to VAFS when the project started three years ago and the General Overseer of the Royal House Chapel, the Reverend Koranchi Ankrah, for the support and the encouragement.
