The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has announced a new shift in its requirements for pensioners regarding the mandatory annual Pensioner Certificate renewal, effective April 2026.

This initiative forms part of SSNIT’s efforts to safeguard the integrity of the scheme and ensure pensioners enjoy quality retirement.

Under the new framework, pensioners retiring at age 60 or voluntarily at age 55 must renew their Pensioner Certificate annually, specifically during their birth month, to maintain uninterrupted pension payments.

In a statement, SSNIT explained that the system is designed to eliminate invalid pension payments, while enhancing transparency and accountability.

“Instructively, once an individual retires, whether at the compulsory retirement age of 60 or the voluntary age of 55, the pensioner must renew their Pensioner Certificate every year during their birth month to guarantee continuous payment of their pensions,” it stated.

SSNIT further emphasised that it has introduced multiple renewal channels.

Effective April 2026, pensioners can complete the process via the SSNIT Mobile App using facial verification, through the SSNIT Virtual Branch, at partner banks, or at any SSNIT branch nationwide.

Additionally, pensioners may call the SSNIT Contact Centre or schedule a home visit for the certificate renewal.

“Pensioners will receive reminders at least one month before their birth month via SMS, email, or other approved communication channels,” the SSNIT statement added.
