As the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) marks its 60th anniversary in 2025, the institution stands tall as one of Ghana’s most enduring pillars of national development.
Under the theme “A Legacy of Service”, the year-long celebration has drawn attention to SSNIT’s remarkable evolution from a small pension administration entity into a robust, technology-driven social security organization serving millions of contributors across the country.
Speaking to Kwasi Afreh Biney, the Director-General of SSNIT, he spoke passionately about the institution’s journey, achievements, and strategic direction for the future. He reaffirmed SSNIT’s unwavering commitment to protecting the incomes of workers, enhancing service delivery, and ensuring sustainability for future generations.
“For sixty years, SSNIT has stood as a trusted guardian of Ghana’s working population transforming contributions into security, dignity, and hope,” Mr. Biney stated. “Our legacy is one of integrity, service, and continuous innovation. We do not just administer pensions; we secure livelihoods.”
Biney highlighted that the 60th anniversary was not only a celebration of longevity but also a moment of reflection and reinvention. The Trust, he noted, is deepening its digital transformation to make access to services faster, more transparent, and customer-focused.
“We are transforming the way we engage with contributors and pensioners. Our digital platforms now make it possible for members to check statements, initiate claims, and receive updates in real time, this is what modern social security must look like,” he emphasized.
As part of the anniversary activities, SSNIT rolled out key initiatives such as the Annual Mobile Service Week, designed to bring SSNIT closer to the people by offering registration, statement updates, and benefit education at community levels. The Trust also held a national symposium that gathered policy experts, labour leaders, and industry stakeholders to discuss the future of social protection in Ghana.
Biney underscored the importance of inclusivity in SSNIT’s new strategy, calling on informal sector workers to register and secure their financial futures.
“Social security must not be a privilege for the few in formal employment. Every Ghanaian who earns an income deserves protection against the uncertainties of life. That is the vision driving our reforms,” he said.
The Director-General further revealed that SSNIT is pursuing partnerships with both public and private organizations to extend coverage, improve compliance, and enhance operational efficiency.
“Our goal is to build a financially resilient and socially inclusive Trust that will stand the test of time. Sixty years is a milestone but it is also a new beginning,” he concluded confidently.
As SSNIT continues to champion transparency, digital modernization, and nationwide accessibility, its 60th anniversary stands as both a commemoration of a proud past and a bold declaration of a forward-looking future.
