President Kufuor calls for good corporate citizenship in the mining

sector

Accra, Dec.16, GNA- President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday called for good corporate citizenship between mining companies and communities where they operate.

He therefore, asked mining companies to work assiduously with the various sector ministries and the stakeholders in the industry to establish friendly working relationships that would impact positively on the mutual benefit of the companies and the people.

President Kufuor made the call when Mr Wayne Murdy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Newmont Mining Corporation now on a visit to Ghana led a delegation from the company to pay a courtesy call on him at the Castle.

The United States based mining company, is investing 450 million dollars in the mining sector for the next four years. It would operate on the surface gold mining belt between Yamfo and Kenyasi in the Brong-Ahafo Region and Ntronang in the Eastern Region and the operation, expected to begin soon would employ about 900 people.

President Kufuor expressed appreciation to the company one of the leading mining companies in the gold industry for investing in Ghana. Mr Murdy said with the co-operation of the sector Ministers and stakeholders in the industry an agreement for the company to commence its operations would be signed soon.

He said the investments in Ghana was an opportunity for the company to use its skills and physical assets acquired over the years to develop the natural resources in Ghana for the benefit of the people.
