Port Authority staff undergo 5th cycle UNCTAD training program

The 5th Cycle of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) training on modern port management has commenced in Tema.

The program intends to equip the Port community including staff of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) with techniques in latest trends on Port transactions.

It is sponsored by the United Nations and supported by the Irish Aid and the (GPHA) with the aim of enhancing all players in the port fraternity with best practices in their field of work.

The cycle five of the UNCTAD module with 23 participants from Ghana's Port Authority, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Shippers Authority and Regional Maritime University would be trained on port operations management, port administration, and port management among other areas.

Opening the session, the Director of Port of Tema, Sandra Opoku d said about 175 persons from GPHA have benefited from the program and tasked the current trainees to be impactful at the end of their study.

She stated that the participants are therefore expected to deliver efficient services to clients after going through the program as part of the port authority’s vision to transform the port to a modern status.

“For an institution, the most important thing for your employees is training and motivation. We do our best to do the motivation so if you are leaving the training, it means that about 50% of your work has failed already and that’s why we take it seriously,” Sandra Opoku stated.

A key objective of the UNCTAD training is to make the Ports of Ghana more efficient and improve service delivery enormously to international standards.

Participants are expected to present a dissertation after the program.
