First Win For Attuquayefio As Ghana Lead

Ghanaian coach Cecil Jones Attuquayefio has won his first match in charge of the Black Stars after three defeats and a draw in the space of two months. On Sunday Attuquayefio led his squad of home-based players and one foreign-based to beat Congo Democratic Republic 3-0 in Accra.

Congo DR defeated Ghana 2-1 in Kinshasa in the first match for the Ghanaian coach when he took charge of the Black Stars. Ghana also lost 3-1 at home to Liberia in a World Cup qualifier in January and 1-0 against Sudan in Omdurman.

Attuquayefio then came under fire for the poor results. He took a major gamble for the World Cup qualifier against Nigeria three weeks ago when he named an entirely hopme-based side to face the Super Eagles. Attuquayefio dropped the foreign-based players, some for disciplinary reasons and others due to poor performance.

Attuquayefio said: "I pray to God that the good fortune continues. I shall still operate an open door policy for both foreign and home-based players."

Jones said his team's brilliant performance was due more to the effort of his players than the weakness of the Congolese Simba who were without Shabani Nonda.

"I am only prepared to call up only those who are prepared to play. For this match we called up Emmanuel Duah, Sammy Kuffour and Charles Amoah but none of them turned up.

"There are many Ghanaian players actively playing professional football both home and abroad and I would use only those who are prepared to die for the nation."

Ghana now move to the top of group 6 with seven points and their next match is against Zimbabwe in Harare. The defeat takes Congo DR to the bottom of the table, while Lesotho are third after losing to Zimbabwe 1-0 in Maseru.
