Patronage for African fabrics high - Trader

Madam Comfort Boahen popularly known as Auntie Connie, (Ntoma Hemaa) and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AACAS Trinity has said, the use of wax prints and African fabrics, has become part of everyday life.

In an exclusive interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem’s Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, the trader who has traded African fabrics over the past 35 years said, every occasion comes with different fabric used.

Every tribe she explained chooses different colours for their ceremonies including funerals, naming ceremonies, festivals among others.

The demand for African fabrics she noted is high. The Asantes she said, prefers black or red coloured fabrics for funerals with the Ga-Dangmes also preferring red depending on the families’ involved.

The white fabrics she stated is usually preferred for naming ceremonies among all tribes.

According to her, modernization has affected names assigned to fabrics.

The names assigned to the fabrics in modern times, she revealed are taken from hymns, songs among others.

She said, the decision to rename fabrics was due to the fact that, people were no longer patronizing the old fabrics with the old names.

‘’Patronage for our fabrics is high. Our counterparts from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Abidjan came down to Ghana to buy our fabrics 8 years ago. However, the economic challenges have affected the patronage but I can boldly say, the patronage is still high.''

Patrons she added, usually purchase the fabrics and send them to their tailors to sew them into their preferred designs and style.
