Domestic airline operator Passion Air has announced a 10% reduction in airfare across all its domestic routes, effective June 17, 2025.
According to the airline, the move comes in response to the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi against major foreign currencies.
This makes it the first domestic airline to adjust its pricing in line with the cedi’s impressive performance over the past few weeks.
“This fare adjustment comes in response to the recent strengthening of the cedi (GH¢) against major foreign currencies. At PassionAir, we are committed to ensuring our valued customers benefit directly from positive market developments,” the airline stated in a notice dated June 16, 2025.
The airline also reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety and comfort, following a week of weather-related flight disruptions.
“As the domestic aviation landscape evolves, we remain focused on offering competitive fares that reflect these changes. While maintaining our commitment to the safety and comfort of our passengers, we continue to prioritise making domestic air travel more accessible and affordable for all Ghanaians,” the statement added.
Earlier, the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, urged domestic airline operators to adjust their fares to reflect the appreciation of the local currency.
He noted that the cedi had remained relatively stable in recent weeks, strong enough to warrant a reduction in transport costs.
“You are aware of the gains our cedi has made. Our cedi has appreciated against all the major currencies. As such, we anticipate that it will trickle down to service delivery and reduce the cost of doing business in our country,” the minister was quoted by myjoyonline.com
Following the cedi’s appreciation, transport fares were reduced by 15%, and the minister emphasised that similar reductions should extend to the aviation and broader services sector.
He also lamented the lack of competitiveness in Ghana’s domestic airline industry, which limits price competition and keeps fares high.
