Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL) has pledged to strengthen its community relations and provide people in areas, where it has been operating with alternative livelihood.

Mr. Agbeko Azumah, Communication and External Relations Manager of the Ahafo Mine, said in line with this goal, it had built an endowment component, to aid those affected by its operation to have sustainable income sources to keep going.

He was welcoming a group of Ghanaian Journalists to the mine at Kenyasi in the Asutifi District, to acquaint themselves with the activities of the multi-national mining giant.

They toured the processing and treatment plants, “subika” pit, the tailings and water storage facilities together with resettlement communities.

The group led by Kenteman Nii Laryea Sowah, Executive Secretary of the Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), also inspected some projects funded by the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF).

Mr. Azumah said it cherished the understanding and strong ties it had established with the people and would do everything as a responsible corporate citizen to build on that for their mutual benefit.

He expressed optimism that the journalists would take advantage of the visit to adequately inform themselves about the operations of the mine to accurately report on these.

He used the opportunity to take them through its history, operations, land access, mitigation and social responsibility programmes.

The Ahafo project started operation in year 2004 and had its first production in 2006.
