National Food Buffer Stock prepares to supply food in case of a lockdown

An undisclosed source at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has revealed that the National Food Buffer Stock Company, will develop an outline system to supply food to underprivileged homes and also support food distribution companies in Ghana.

According to the source, the Food Buffer Stock Company is working to produce some essential goods should the country face a possible lockdown.

Majority of Ghanaians are vulnerable to food insecurity in Ghana and their situation will most likely deteriorate in the event of any pandemic that distorts the food production system.

Charles Kwowe Nyaaba, a Farmer and member of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana earlier said the situation could worsen the nation’s food insecurity situation and could cause more damage to human health if practical measures are not put in place soon.

“We anticipate a state where yields could drop below the 2019 figure if the Covid-19 is not contained before the end of April 2020 without specific interventions in the agricultural sector,” Charles Nyaaba cautioned.

Meanwhile, measures to tackle the spread of Coronavirus has led to a daily increase in panic buying and hoarding of food items on the market.

This has led to an irregular hike in the price of food items on the market by traders across the country trying to cash in on the situation.
