Apart from producing food to feed the nation, it is a known fact that the Agriculture sector also employs over 60 percent of the total workforce of the nation hence the importance of Agriculture to the economic growth of the nation cannot be overemphasized.
This was made known by the District Chief Executive for the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Katherine Lankono at Kpazie, a farming community in the district on the occasion of the 33rd edition of the 2017 National Farmers’ and Fishers’ Day celebration.
Speaking on the theme, “Planting for Food and Jobs’’, Madam Katherine said food security would be increased, disposable income as well as the stabilization of the national currency for the Ghanaian people would be ensured when farming is prioritized.
She said the NPP Administration, through prudent policies and programmes putting in place will help remove constraints in the Agriculture sector to make investment less risky, rewarding and make it a business friendly for people.
According to the DCE, the district for many years has recognized the great contributions by farmers to the growth of both local and the national economy saying government has put in place various support schemes to improve the conditions under which farmers operate.
She mentioned the “One-District, One-Factory” project as one of the policies government has introduced to support the farmers.
“The programme has an ultimate objective of creating an environment conducive for each local government area to own factories relative to their well-endowed resources and capacity to provide jobs and wealth for the country. This will see to the industrialization of the country’s economy as part of the transformation process envisaged by the president of Ghana,” she said.
She added that, the district cultivates traditional staple crops, livestock and fish products which are eaten locally and also exported to neighbouring regions in Ghana.
The DCE appealed to Chiefs, Elders and clan heads to release lands under very reasonable terms to individuals or groups who will be willing to invest in Agriculture. She also encouraged all to educate and sensitize community members on the need to avoid burning bushes as many people have not yet harvested their crops.
A 42-year-old mother of six children, Madam Rebecca Kandee was adjudged the 2nd runner-up, District Best Farmer for the Nadowli-Kaleo District.
Mr. Stephen Sungpuo 40 years was also adjudged the 1st runner-up and 65-year-old Mr. Felix Bazin was named the overall District Farmer of the year.
The overall District Farmer of the year advised the youth to venture into farming because it is a very lucrative job.
