Fishing Vessels Asked To Re-Register

Owners of fishing Vessels operating in the waters of the country have been given 45 days beginning from the 12th of March to make them available for inspection and re-registration.

According to the Minister of State responsible for Fisheries, Ishmael Ashietey, this is to control the number of vessels operating in the country and also ensure sustainable and responsible fishing.

The minister said, " The 93 vessels currently operating in the country are far more than the number required by law." Mr.Ashietey said, the measures are part of policies that the government wants to put in place to help run the fishing industry in order to reduce the environmental damage to the country's fishing resources.

He announced that government is brining in two patrol vessels for the Ghana Navy to monitor activities of fishing vessels in the waters of the country. The first is expected to be in the country by July.
