Gov't is full of pretence, hypocrisy - MP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) member of parliament for Gomoa West constituency, Ama Benyiwa Doe, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will never perceive the Kufuor government as a listening one, until they have seen the interdiction of Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, chief executive officer of the troubled Volta River Authority, while unsoiled investigations continue.

She said the government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and President Kufuor, for that matter, have pretended to the whole world that it is the most listening government prior to the implementation of its programmes and decisions, an impression she observed as very misleading.

This impression, she said, is killing, citing the case of Dr. Wereko-Brobby as a clear indication of pretence and hypocrisy in the NPP.

Madam Ama Benyiwa Doe was speaking to NDC supporters in Accra last Wednesday.

According to her, it is disappointing and deceitful for a government which professes to be a constitutional government and a preacher of the rule of law to by-pass the constitution of the land and pursue its own agenda.

She said the misuse of government funds, such as the GETFund, the road fund and the common fund, is an indication that the government is not following the dictates of the constitution.

The outspoken Minority MP alleged that most of these funds are being diverted to unknown places, which she said has not got the approval of parliament and the constitution.

Mrs. Benyiwa Doe stated for instance that it was the diversion of the GETFund that prompted teachers and headmasters to stop work last month, forcing the government to cough up some money for them.

She said it is not startling that several developmental projects have been halted for lack of funds.

She noted that nothing reflects about President Kufuor and his people that suggest they are indeed a listening government, adding that the people of this country can only be convinced by the present government when it takes the complaints and grievances of the people in good faith and acts promptly upon them.

According to her, it is ridiculous and highly hypocritical on the part of the Kufuor government to allow a public servant who has been accused of impropriety and corruption to decide on his own to step aside of his duty, while investigation is still ongoing. "So what happens after the investigations?" She asked.

Madam Ama Benyiwa Doe also asserted that the cost of living has increased abnormally where people are finding it difficult to make ends meet, a situation which she said was far better during the PNDC and NDC eras.

According to her, parents who once could afford to pay their children's school fees are now complaining bitterly, especially in the villages because "they can not even pay for the little they used to pay when NDC was in office."
