A recent report by the Ghana Statistical Service has revealed that more women are self-employed in the informal sector compared to men.

The Labour Force Survey Report reveals 74.2% of women are self-employed in the informal sector compared to the 68.6% representation of men, with Ashanti Region recording the highest number of employed persons regionally in the informal sector.

The report also recorded more females employed per the estimated employment population across the country. Out of the total population of 13, 712,631 persons, 4,986,605 representing approximately 54% are female as against the 4,284,334 representing 46% males.

Ghana’s unemployment rate stands at 11.9% with the Upper East Region recording the highest number with 18.4% and Brong Ahafo region recording the least number of unemployed persons with 8.4%.

The first stand-alone Labour Force survey report conducted in 2015 in all ten regions of the country provides data on employment and unemployment rates in the country. It also touches on labour underutilization, underemployment and other employment related issues.

It provides information to relevant institutions to enable them make informed decisions on labour-force related issues in the country.
