Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of deception and propaganda following the suspension of the controversial 0.75% Mobile Money-to-bank transfer charge by the Bank of Ghana.

Addressing the media in Parliament on Tuesday, May 26, Afenyo-Markin said the government’s handling of the proposed levy exposed what he described as inconsistencies between its promises and actions.

“So, we are saying that NDC is a scam; It’s a government of settings, they don’t believe in what they say. It says one thing and does another. It doesn’t keep its promise, it is a government of propaganda,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing public backlash over the proposed 0.75% charge on wallet-to-bank transactions, which the central bank has since suspended pending further consultations with stakeholders.

The Minority Leader argued that the suspension of the levy does not resolve concerns over how the charge was introduced, insisting that the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, must appear before Parliament to explain the circumstances leading to the policy proposal.

According to him, the attempted implementation of the charge without prior public engagement raises serious governance and transparency concerns.

“The NDC is using the Bank of Ghana and a private sector company to enforce this levy. We have a question for the finance minister; he must immediately come to Parliament on Thursday to explain the circumstances leading to the imposition of this 0.75% charges on Mobile Money transactions. We are not interested in the suspension, we are interested in how come but for the public outcry they were going to spring this surprise on the Ghanaian public,” he stated.

The Bank of Ghana has suspended the fee pending further stakeholder engagement.
