Microfinance Conference At Cape Vars

UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES TWO-DAY 3rd ANNUAL MICROFINANCE CONFERENCE

THEME: MICROFINANCE: A TOOL FOR ACHIEVING THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS IN AFRICA

The Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Cape Coast invites interested participants to the third annual microfinance conference on the above theme to be held at the University of Cape Coast on11th and 12th January, 2008. The third annual microfinance conference intends to consolidate the achievements from the two previous conferences and contextualize the microfinance debate within the global objective of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy II of the Republic of Ghana. The goals of the conference are to:

? provide a platform to practitioners, researchers, academics, professionals and other stakeholders to share experiences and evidence on microfinance as a tool for meeting the MDGs in Africa;

? assess the performance of the microfinance industry as a developmental strategy; and

? identify and begin the process of documenting local specific and situational ?best practices? for the microfinance industry in Africa. Call for Papers The Organizing Committee requests for submission of abstracts (preferably electronic) with a maximum of 300 words on any of the following sub themes.

Sub-Themes

1. Upscaling and Mission Drift: A case for halving extreme poverty by 50 percent.

2. Microfinance: An enhancer for achieving Universal Primary Education.

3. Microfinance financial and non-financial services and health promotion.

3.1 Microfinance and the reduction of child mortality.

3.2 Microfinance and maternal health.

3.3 Microfinance and HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

4. Microfinance and Gender.

5. Global partnership for development through micro financing, example fostering linkages between;

? microfinance and traditional financial institutions and

? donor institutions and domestic microfinance institutions.

The organizers? of the conference envisages to reach out to all stakeholders in the industry including academics, policy makers and practitioners as the main target group.
