MiDA to fix 14,000 street lights across the country to support efficient power supply

The entity mandated to implement the Ghana Power Compact, the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has assured that it will fix some 14,000 street lights across the country to ensure efficient power supply and consumption.

The move follows efforts by MiDA to safeguard the lives and property of the general public and institutions across the country.

According to the Chief Executive of MiDA, Mr Martin Eson-Benjamin, the authority will also continue with the retrofitting of public institutions towards ensuring lower electricity bills and efficient power consumption.

Some of the institutions that will benefit from the retrofitting exercise are the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the University of Ghana, the Ministries amongst others.

“Counting from today, the Power Compact has one year, six months and 12 days to end, the termination of the ECG Private Sector Participation Project and with the related events of last year is now behind us, the countdown is to completion has began.”

“We have prioritized the completion of two Bulk Supply Points (BSP) at Pokuase and Kasoa to ensure efficient and sustainable delivery of power to ECG’s consumers in the micro, small, medium and large industries and institutions, as well as markets, economic enclaves and domestic consumers,” Mr Eson-Benjamin said.

“The Power Compact now has available US$308.2 million and some US$23 million as Counterpart Fund from the government of Ghana. This is very significant and keeps MiDA very much awake. The funds now available will support investments into infrastructural and business process-related projects that enhance the ECG’s operational efficiencies, cut commercial and technical losses, and improves ECG’s finances”

“We shall also apply the funds to projects that will improve access to power in eight selected markets in Accra and two in Tamale,” he added.

Mr Esson Benjamin speaking at a press soiree on February 13 in Accra re-affirmed his outfits commitment to judiciously utilize the remaining US$331.2 million funds for the implementation of infrastructure and business-related projects to enhance energy efficiency under the Ghana Power Compact Programme.
