Market Cooldown: GSE posts modest gains amid low turnover

Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) slowed significantly on Friday, August 22, 2025, as both trade volume and turnover recorded sharp declines.

A total of 1,004,691 shares valued at GH¢3.73 million were exchanged, representing an 88% drop in both volume and turnover compared to the previous session on August 21, 2025.

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) gained 9.99 points to close at 7,346.69. Despite this, the index posted a weekly loss of 0.89%, though it still reflected a 4-week gain of 10.09% and an impressive year-to-date return of 50.28%.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) inched down by 0.07% to close at 3,409.46, translating into a weekly decline of 0.19%, a 4-week loss of 0.08%, but a strong year-to-date gain of 43.21%.

The total market capitalisation of the GSE currently stands at GH¢149.9 billion.

Despite the sharp fall in trading activity, the market ended the week on a relatively stable note, with modest movements across key indices and select equities posting gains. Out of the 17 equities that traded on Friday, three recorded gains while two declined.

GCB Bank led the gainers with a 2.5% rise in its share price to close at GH¢9.85. GOIL followed with a 1.35% increase, while MTN Ghana added 0.26%.

On the losing side, Ecobank Transnational fell by 1.27%, and Republic Bank Ghana dipped by 0.91%.

Government misses treasury bills target again, rates increase

MTN Ghana was the most actively traded stock, with 834,708 shares changing hands. It was followed by Ecobank Transnational (88,581 shares), CalBank (27,630 shares), and Republic Bank Ghana (20,312 shares).
