The World Trade Centre (WTC) Accra, known for creating innovative services for international business, connects over 750,000 companies and organisations to a global network.

However, what was once a symbol of international business innovation is now grappling with serious infrastructure challenges. Business activity at the centre has also slowed compared to previous years.

Speaking at the opening session of the Ghana Transport and Logistics Fair 2025 on October 22, President John Dramani Mahama lamented the deplorable state of the World Trade Centre, citing the lack of basic utilities such as water.

According to him, even accessing water after using the washroom has become a challenge.

He also highlighted the malfunctioning central aircondition, and the use of staircase which have rendered the upper halls difficult to access.

He therefore urged the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to allocate part of its budget for 2026 towards refurbishing the World Trade Centre.

President Mahama unveils Ghana Infrastructure Plan

“I hope SSNIT are here because they own this property. Just as I sat by Togbe Afede, I am supposed to go upstairs. I hear some of the exhibitions are upstairs. One, the lift is not working, two, the central aircondition is broken down, three, if I want to use Togbe's office washroom, there is no water. He has to put a barrel there to contain water. Really, this is not reflective of our World Trade Center," he stated.

The President further said, “I saw SSNIT's budget for next year. There are looking to rehabilitate some of their properties. I will urge you kindly add this World Trade Centre to the properties you are renovating. Because it can host more activities, there are big halls upstairs, but nobody wants to come because you have to climb all the stairs to access them. So please, if SSNIT are here, add that to one of your projects for rehabilitation budget for next year."

President Mahama’s call is aimed at maintaining key national infrastructure and ensuring that Ghana’s business hubs remain competitive and welcoming.
