MTN leads Ghana’s cashless economy drive

MTN Senior Commercial Manager of General Trade for Northern Ghana, Mr. Samuel Amoh, has said that the telecommunication network is proud to lead the country’s efforts to drive a cashless economy and boost greater economic activities.

The Company had indicated that it was positioned to lead the country’s digital agenda for all forms of electronic payments and added that it had over 9 million active subscribers, 100,000 agents and over 50,000 merchants as well as 17 partner banks nationwide.

Mr Amoh also said MTN was in the quest of providing the Ghana Police Service with a forensic laboratory to assist in investigating in move to combat cybercrime.

“Cybercrime has been a worry for many institutions and due to that, MTN Ghana will build a forensic laboratory this year to support Ghana Police Service to help kept cybercrime in the country,” he said.

He was interacting with the media in Wa during the lunch of MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) 10th Anniversary Celebration on the theme: “Celebrating 10 years of making lives simple”.

The anniversary was marked with a float by a large crowd jubilating on the streets of the Upper West Regional capital to further create awareness on the need for public to choose MTN as the preferred mobile network, particularly for MoMo transactions.

The last 10 years was for widening coverage of MoMo services but Mr Amoh said, “Now, the focus will be on adding more services to the nation and making sure every MTN subscriber is enrolled into the mobile money services”.

According to him, it is has created nearly 90,000 job opportunities throughout the country by the introduction of the MTN merchant system.

“MTN Ghana has created over 85,000 jobs across the country through its merchant system, which are dotted nationwide,” Mr Amoh said.

He advised customers not to compromise their four digit points pin code for accessing money on their MoMo accounts.

“The only way someone can access your MoMo accounts is if they get access to your pin and just like how one will not sign your cheque and compromise it, it is the same way you don’t have to give your pin to anyone,” he added.

MTN MoMo customer and a market woman, Madam Nafisah Mumuni, applauded MTN for introducing what she called ‘major changer’ in Ghana’s financial sector.

“We used to carry money everywhere we go and sometimes as market women we get robbed but since I joined MTN mobile money, I have stop carrying cash with me and I want to thank MTN for making mobile money a reality in Ghana,” she said.
