MTN Foundation spends $13 million on Corporate Social Initiatives

Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) Ghana Foundation has expended $13 million as part of its corporate social intervention investment, affecting some four million people across the country.

The Foundation, which was established in 2007 and funded through one percent profit after tax of Scancom PLC, had executed over 145 projects in priority areas, in education, health and economic empowerment.

Mr. Samuel Koranteng, Corporate Services Executive of MTN made this known at the Volta Region Editors Forum in Ho.

He said there were interventions in education, ICT, libraries, dormitories, classrooms, scholarship schemes, springboard mentorship and the Heroes of Change programme.

Mr. Koranteng said a total of 52 projects were executed in the health sector, spanning the construction of wards, maternity blocks, surgeries, equipment supplies as well as the construction of CHPS compounds.

He said under the economic empowerment, ten projects, including ‘Hitmakers’, micro-enterprise, shea butter production and ‘My Business’, among others were executed.

Others include community support programmes (21 Days of Y'ello Care), blood donation exercises and reward for community achievers.

Mr. Korantng said the Volta region's share of these CSI included distribution of science sets, teaching aid and construction of a three-unit block for the Akatsi Basic School, a library at Tsito SHS and support for the physically challenged at Saint Teresa's School at Abor, in addition to Teacher Improvement award programmes.

Others are the Kpedze Health Centre, Kpeve Tongor Water System, Abolove-Nolope ICT Centre, support for Regional Inter-School Spelling Bee, Save-A-Life campaign and Bright School support.

He said "these are all brightening lives" through the MTN Ghana Foundation.

Mr. Koranteng said MTN was expanding data and digitizing its footprints across the country, and leading the data revolution to spur connectivity and bridge the technology gap.

Mr. Raymond Gibson, Acting Volta/Eastern Commercial Manager of MTN outdoored some new products including KaiOs, a smart feature phone, and TurboNet -a high-speed router.

He cautioned customers to be vigilant and protect their investments in mobile telephony and never compromise their point numbers.

Mr. Samuel Duly, Acting Volta/Eastern Network Manager said coverage in the region was improving.
