IET-GH calls for greater investment in engineering

The Institution of Engineering and Technology Ghana (IET-GH) have called for increased investment in engineering education, innovation and professional development as Ghana joins the global community to commemorate World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.

In a press statement issued on March 4, 2026, and signed by its President, Davor Wonder Salami, the Institution reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical engineering practice, innovation and professional excellence in support of national development.

World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, observed annually on March 4 and endorsed by UNESCO, recognises the critical role engineers play in advancing infrastructure, environmental protection, industrial growth and technological advancement worldwide.

According to IET-GH, engineers in Ghana continue to play a vital role in addressing pressing national challenges, including climate change, sanitation, resilient infrastructure, energy transition and sustainable urban development.

The Institution noted that engineering remains the backbone of infrastructure delivery and industrial transformation, underscoring the profession’s importance in building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Ghana.

“As we commemorate this year’s celebration, we express deep appreciation to all engineers across the country whose dedication, innovation and professionalism continue to drive development while responding to the growing challenges of climate change, urbanisation and environmental sustainability,” the statement said.

IET-GH commended engineers working across public and private sector institutions for their contributions to improving living standards nationwide.
Among the institutions recognised were the Tema Oil Refinery, Volta River Authority, Electricity Company of Ghana, Ghana Grid Company Limited, Ghana Highways Authority, the Ghana Standards Authority, and the Ghana Water Company Limited, among others.

The Institution also acknowledged the collaboration between government, academia, industry partners and development organisations in strengthening policies, promoting technological advancement and enhancing sustainable infrastructure delivery.

IET-GH encouraged young people to pursue careers in engineering, stressing that the future of Ghana’s development depends on their skills, creativity and integrity.

The Institution further called on stakeholders to continue investing in engineering education, capacity building, research and innovation, describing them as essential pillars for achieving sustainable development goals.

“IET-GH reiterates its commitment to promoting engineering excellence and advocating responsible engineering practices that align with national development priorities and global sustainability goals.”
